Interview

  1. Do Your Research
  2. Look Sharp
  3. Be Prepared
  4. Be On Time
  5. Never Be Late
  6. Listen
  7. Answer The Questions Asked
  8. Give Specific Examples

1. Research
Film Editor for a company
Company - Google/LinkedIn/Website/Comments/Showreel/WhatRoleYouWantToDo/WhoWorksThere?

2. Look Sharp
Film Editor for a company
Confidence - Should feel confident in what you're wearing.

For a Film Editor/Video Editor I would wear an ironed white shirt that would be tucked into grey jeans. Tie is optional. Shoe wear would be brown/tan brogues.

3. Be Prepared
Film Editor for a company
Take your C.V
Copy of references.
Have questions to ask them.

4. Be On Time
15 Minutes before the interview - Allow for extra time to get there.
Do a Recce on the location.

Example: Job Interview at Netflix London HQ
I will get the train from Downham Market to London Kings Cross, the journey will be 1 hour and 40 minutes if there are no delays.
Then from Kings Cross I will walk to the Netflix Offices at the Fitzroy Place. This will take 27 minutes on the quickest route.
The total journey time would be 2 hours and 7 minutes as long as there are no delays.

If my interview is at 10AM I would catch the 06:54 train from Downham Market and arrive in London at 08:35. This gives me enough time to walk to the location, prepare for the interview and if needed eat, get a drink and make sure I am looking sharp.

5. Enthusiasm
Handshake + Name
HI IM OSCAR BYRNE ELLIS!
Before going in, go to toilet and check how you look.

6. Listen
Listen carefully and read between the lines.
Be honest
Body Language

7. Answer Questions Asked
If you're unsure then ask them to repeat.
Break down the questions if unsure.
Can you explain what you mean by that? (Clarification)
Example: " I have participated in 4 multi-camera productions in 2018 that required me to synchronise 3 cameras"

8. Give Examples
Specific scenarios
Note examples and learn them.
Example: " I have participated in 4 multi-camera productions in 2018 that required me to synchronise 3 cameras"
Need to be related to success, unique examples to me.
Example:
" While a grounds keeper at Denver Golf Club, I was in charge of the maintenance of the grounds which required me to constantly water, cut and shape the green to create a challenging but fun experience.
These tasks were dangerous as at any time there could be from 5 - 20 golfers on the course, this meant that every day I would coordinate with a team of 5 grounds keepers preparing for the day in order to keep an effective, productive and safe workflow."

"During the course of Level 2 Creative Media, I was tasked with helping the in-house production company, Springboard TV with their weekly stream which was broadcasted live to an audience from Youtube and Twitch. This taught me how to work in a high pressured environment with a production team of 6 where I have taken the roles of Camera Operator, Vision Mixer, Lights, Sound and Autocue."

9. Ask Questions

What type of clients do you typically work with.
Is there a dress code, if so what is it?
Are we required to use software outside the Adobe Creative Suite?
What are the challenges that the company are currently facing?
Are there opportunities for career progression within the company?

10. Follow Up
Email to get feedback from interview, this will give me areas to improve if I don't get the job and will allow me to improve for future interviews.
Market Yourself.
Be Cool!
Don't burn bridges.

My Examples:

1) While studying level 3 Media at the College of West Anglia in King's Lynn, I was tasked to create a Silent film. I had a crew of 3 people which consisted of the director, camera man and runner. As the director of the project I was assigned with creating my vision with the help of the camera man.

We used a single DSLR camera and recorded in 24FPS at the docks in King's Lynn. I had to take a different approach with this project as previous projects were more modern theme whereas with this project we had to cater towards a Charlie Chaplin black and white theme.

I would constantly refer back to my team on each scene/shot to get their feedback and see if there was any areas in which I could improve.
From the constant feedback from my crew, I was able to create an effective and successful project which I received a high grade.

2) On my second year of Level 3 Media at the College of West Anglia in King's Lynn, I was asked to create a Multi-Camera broadcast. I had a crew of 7 which consisted of the director, 4 camera operators and two actors. We had shot outside of college at my local village hall  due to safeguarding issues which I had notified the managers about. We ran into multiple issues that meant we were unsuccessful with the shoot.

My Role was Director and Director of Photography, I was tasked with cooperating with my crew to create the production that I had envisioned. Setup took around 30 minutes which was rather quick considering we had 4 cameras with tripods,  a slider, green screen and computer stations however we ran into issues related to internet connection which meant the computers were unable to connect to each other. I gathered my team and we discussed on how we should proceed and came up with a plan to connect the computers up via a mobile phone hotspot, this required each computer to have a wireless dongle that two of the team bought from Downham Market Tesco.

From this situation I learnt that I should create a recce report on the location that I plan on shooting at and make sure that it meets the requirements that we need.

3) While attending Level 2 Media at the King's Lynn Campus for College Of West Anglia I took part in the in-house production company, SpringboardTV's weekly stream which was broadcasted live to an audience from Youtube and Twitch. This taught me how to work in a high pressured environment with a production team where I have taken the roles of Camera Operator, Vision Mixer, Lights, Sound and Autocue. From this experience I have been able to apply it to my future productions when I am in need of a studio. I have also undertaken work experience with Springboard TV, which included working with a team of three, whereby we used a two camera set up to conduct interviews and record the NCS graduation. This taught me how to work in a public space while on set and how to properly light the area.

Questions to be asked:
1) What makes you stand out?

a: I have an extensive knowledge of Adobe Suite Software and can utilise Premiere Pro, Photoshop and After effect to create professional videos that suit the client's need. On top of that I am ready to adapt and learn new techniques and abilities that I can apply to future productions.

2) Let's say you were approached by a member of your team about an encoding error on Premiere Pro how would you proceed?g

a: I would first figure out what section of the timeline is causing the encoding error, I would then proceed to check if the disk that the video is being exported to has space which if it doesn't then we would create space by deleting any unnecessary files.
If this doesn't correct the issue then I will research the error code and find a solution. Finally I would ask the member of the team to delete the section that as causing the issue and then re-edit it.

3) What are your greatest professional strengths

a: I have several strengths including being punctual and able to adapt to any situation / scenario. For example,

while attending Level 2 Media at the King's Lynn Campus for College Of West Anglia I took part in the in-house production company, SpringboardTV's weekly stream which was broadcasted live to an audience from Youtube and Twitch. This taught me how to work in a high pressured environment with a production team of up to 6 people where I had to adapt to the roles of Camera Operator, Vision Mixer, Lights, Sound and Autocue.

An example of being punctual would be
On my second year of Level 3 Media at the College of West Anglia in King's Lynn, I was asked to create a Multi-Camera broadcast. I had a crew of 7 which consisted of the director, 4 camera operators and two actors. I arrived on location 15-30 minutes early which allowed me to see the facilites and protocols in case of a fire. I was also able to visualise where equipment would be placed and the best way to shoot.

4) What do you consider to be your weaknesses

I would consider time management to be my biggest weakness, in the past I would frequently leave report work and paperwork to the last minute which in turn would make me stressed with the deadline nearing. However recently I have been tackling this weakness by setting myself a schedule to reduce the amount of time I waste and will create a routine for me that will become a habit.

5)What are you interested in?

a: Im quite the computer nerd, besides video editing I enjoy creating websites with HTML and CSS and I even dabble programming in Java. I enjoy playing MMOs or Massively Multiplayer Online Games and First Person Shooters. Aside from the computer I enjoy watching Formula 1 and support Lewis Hamilton who recently won his 5th Championship.
