How Apply? Uni Interview (NEW STAR)

Personal Statement / Bio
In order to apply to University I needed to create a Personal Statement/Bio which would include an opening statement that would draw the reader in. I would then need to talk about interests, previous experiences and hobbies. Over November and early December I proceeded to spend an hour a day planning/writing my personal statement, this would primarily take place at my home however there would be days where I would be in lesson at the College of West Anglia writing my personal statement. During this time I created multiple drafts as I wasn't quite satisfied with the direction I was going in but early December I had finalised my personal statement and sent it to my brother for checking, after a few adjustments I felt that I had created a personal statement that made me stand out and I submitted it.

Interview Video
We were tasked to plan an interview video that displays a good interview and a bad interview. My team consisted of Harry, Dylan and Antonia and we came up with the idea to do a choose your own path video. I was happy with my team as we each had skills that could be applied to the work. I'm a good editor, Harry has a lot of camera experience, Dylan and Antonia used to do Drama. The twist to this project was every group would create a plan, then switch and film another team's video and then edit another team's clips. When it came to the filming stage only me and Harry were available however Chris was in and helped us, we also weren't given a script as the team who planned the video didn't create a script. We asked the planning team the basics of what they'd like and then we filmed the video in the room across from SpringboardTV's office at the College of West Anglia. Editing was the easiest stage and we didn't come across any issues. This project could've gone smoother if the every team had all the vital paperwork ready to give to the filming team.

Career Interview
To help us in the future with job interviews we participated in mock interviews, the interview would take place in the Production Studio at the College of West Anglia's Creative Media Block. we were told to come up with 5 questions that we will be asked.
1) What makes you stand out?
2) Let's say you were approached by a member of your team about an encoding error on Premiere Pro how would you proceed?
3) What are your greatest professional strengths
4) What do you consider to be your weaknesses
5)What are you interested in?

Interviews are one of my weaknesses therefore when going into my mock interview I was very nervous and constantly going over the questions that I'd be asked and what my response would be. During the interview I found that I struggled to remember words and stumbled a lot. At the end my teacher gave me feedback and said that the mock interview was a lot better than my interview I had to  go to for Level 2 Media.

Letter & CV
To practice applying for a job we created a letter that would be sent to the employer with our CV attached to. I chose to create an application letter for an Editing role.

To practice applying for a job, we created a letter that would be sent to an eployer with our CV attached to. This meant I had to create a CV which ultimately was created while I was at my computer at home in around 20 minutes. while creating the CV I didn't know if I should include my Highschool grades which I didn't get any above the grade D and when checking the examples for CVs I only saw they listed grades C-A*. Apart from that I created my cv quickly and then proceeded to write a letter.

The letter was an easy process due to an assignment in Level 1 ICT at the College of West Anglia where I was tasked to create an application letter which I did very well. I look at examples of application letters to see techniques they used and techniques I could apply to my letter. I wanted to make it short to keep the reader interested.

Telephone Call
We were tasked to get into groups of 2 and conduct a telephone call where one of us would be the lead editor and the other was the client. The scenario was; The client plan to visit tomorrow to view the finished video however there was a problem and the video isn't finished so you have to call the client and try to get more time to complete the video. I was paired with Harry and at first I was very reluctant to do this in the class as there are so many people in there that could listen, fortunately we were able to conduct the call outside the class room. Once outside I took the role of lead editor and we started our conversation however we ran into audio problems due to my phone, this was quickly resolved by recording our conversation on Harry's phone and it went smoothly. It was then Harry's turn to be the lead editor and apart from a few interruptions his went smoothly. This has certainly helped me to contact the client over the phone.

Showreel
We were assigned to create a showreel that will be used to showcase our previous projects and media skills to future employers. I was excited to create my showreel because it meant I could go full out on showing my skills with After Effects and editing in general. I decided to create video in After Effects as this would allow me to use the track matte panel and the multitude of effects that AE has to offer. There were a few issues that came with using After Effects such as the Macs started to slow down and lag whenever I applied hard effects like particles this would be partially resolved by reducing the playback quality but it still lingered. Next time I update my showreel I intend to use a computer that can handle After Effects.

  1. You can evaluate at any time and use a reflective model (a cyclical one... see lecture notes from tomorrow). Ensure that you have the list as to what to analyse.
